Drawing upon his behind-the-bench appellate experience and extensive analytical work on complex state and federal litigation issues, Muhammad Usman focuses his practice on removal proceedings and federal litigation. His training at the Florida Third District Court of Appeal equipped him with a deep understanding of procedural strategy, record development and the intersection of administrative and judicial review. He now applies this background to represent clients in immigration enforcement matters, challenges to agency action and federal court litigation involving constitutional, statutory and due-process claims.
Muhammad Usman joins the firm following his service as a Senior Law Clerk to the Honorable Monica Gordo at the Florida Third District Court of Appeal. In that role, he drafted bench memoranda, judicial opinions and dispositions in complex civil matters involving commercial disputes, contractual issues, real-estate litigation, insurance conflicts, labor law violations, arbitration, class actions and business torts. He analyzed appellate records and jurisdictional questions, conducted in-depth research on novel business and commercial law issues and provided written recommendations to the court in preparation for oral argument. His work also included advising on extraordinary writs—such as certiorari, mandamus and prohibition—and preparing proposed rulings on motions involving appellate stays, jurisdictional dismissals and rehearing en banc. He additionally trained and supervised judicial interns on advanced research and analytical writing.
Before joining the appellate court, Mr. Usman served in the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office as a Legal Specialist, where he evaluated felony arrests, interviewed witnesses and law enforcement, managed discovery and prepared pre-trial motions and case-filing recommendations. He also previously worked as a Victim Witness Counselor, supporting prosecutors through deposition defense, motion hearings and felony jury trials, including assisting with witness preparation, trial strategy and evidentiary presentation.
Mr. Usman began his legal career at Surridge & Beecheno, where he supported multinational corporate clients on regulatory compliance, drafted pleadings and motions in commercial disputes, conducted due diligence for mergers and joint ventures and assisted in employment, lease and construction agreements for international manufacturing companies. He also handled international trademark coordination and contributed to arbitration matters involving global media clients.
Mr. Usman earned his LL.M. from the University of Florida Levin College of Law, where he was selected as the Student Speaker for the 2020 Commencement and received the International Scholar Tuition Scholarship. He holds an LL.B. from the University of London, where he graduated in the top five percent of his class and served as President of the University Association of Mooters.
He is admitted to practice in New York. He has been recognized for excellence in legal research and writing by the Florida Third District Court of Appeal and has twice received Outstanding Performance Awards from the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office.
